fes

exploring historic fes feels like wandering through a massive living museum where every alleyway offers a new experience. the busy souks showcase incredible arts and crafts, while old fondouks and madrasas provide a quiet escape into stunning architecture and history.

here are the highlights from my unforgettable day trip to fes…

souks of fes

historic fes is famous for its traditional artisan quarters. walking through the medina, it is an amazing experience to pass the copper-beaters in souk el-seffarine and the woodworkers in souk el-nejjarine.

the highlight of the city's craft heritage is the historic leather tanneries. here, visitors can watch workers still process and dye leathers on rows of stone vats using traditional techniques.

fondouk el-nejjarine

once a merchant inn, fondouk el-nejjarine now houses a wooden arts and crafts museum. inside, the galleries showcase an incredible collection of traditional artifacts and historic woodworking tools. the courtyard feels like a step back in history while its beautiful terrace with a cafe offers incredible views over the medina.

madrasa el-attarine

a centuries old religious school, madrasa el-attarine is famous for its incredible tilework and carved plaster. the walls are covered in arabic calligraphy and cedar carvings that showcase the islamic art. the small courtyard is a masterpiece of marinid architecture, and it offers a peaceful escape from the busy streets of the souks.

jnane sbil

originally created in the 18th century as a private royal garden, jnane sbil is a public park in the medina. walking through its shaded pathways feels like entering an oasis. here, the grand fountains, towering palms, and a peaceful lake offer a refreshing break from the intense heat and noise of the medina.

venues

The Medina is packed with incredible venues for local dishes and drinks, from hidden rooftop cafes to cozy spots in narrow alleys.

i really loved both the atmosphere and food at fondouk bazaar and le tarbouche, while café turath is my top pick for sipping mint tea and watching the bustling street life.
